What do coaches do?
Expanding Perspectives:The coach challenges existing realities and paradigms of the coachee. He stretches the coachee to see beyond and reach for stretched goals. He questions the coachee's underlying beliefs of what is possible and what is not through courageous candid dialogues. He interrogates the coachee's reality and posses the challenge of "why not?"
Validating Strengths:
The coach validates the coachee's thoughts and ideas via encouragement and acknowledgement. The coach helps the coachee discover his own strengths and help him leverage on it. He reaffirms certain positive strengths seen in his coachee by drawing attention to it and builds self-esteem in the coachee by confirming what he has observed.
Liberating Energy:
The coach provides energy by helping the coachee release it in a positive manner. The power derived from motivation in a person comes from a compelling and defined motive, as a result of clarity, to do something. Thus coaching is about helping someone achieve clarity of his goals and desires and this awakening liberates energy.
Facilitating Solution:
The coach facilitates the coachee to search for his own solutions. He explores with the coachee the impact of decision made by the coachee. He does not normally provide solutions although he might have an opinion on it. He occasionally shares what has worked for him and invites the coachee to explore those new possibilities from that angle. He always gets the coachee to work on their own solutions before offering other options.
Increasing Resourcefulness:
The coach may suggest or refers coachee to experts, books, tools, assessments. Sometimes the coach may also be the expert in some areas that are new to the coachee and coach may then switch to teaching instead of coaching in order to impart the knowledge. Through skillful questioning, the coachee might realize that he may know of resources that might be of help to him.
Expanding Coachee's Options:
The coach helps the coachee expands his options available by suggesting possibilities rather than directing the coachee to try out his way. Our mind is a wonderful piece of treasure. By stretching our thinking we sometimes dig deep into our treasures to find that there are other options available to us to resolve the issue.
Providing Care and Support:
The coach shows care and concern via listening, patience, safety and love. There is nothing more powerful than knowing that there is someone out there who will support you in times of trouble and need. The coach provides this comfort that he is there to help.
